Frequently Asked Questions

What are acetal rods used for?
Acetal rods are commonly used for machining mechanical parts that require high strength, low friction, and tight dimensional stability. Typical applications include gears, bushings, pulleys, rollers, wear strips, and precision components.
Is acetal easy to machine?
Yes. Acetal is one of the easiest engineering plastics to machine. It cuts cleanly, holds tolerances well, and produces a smooth finish on CNC lathes and mills. It behaves similarly to high-quality hardwood when cutting.
What’s the difference between acetal and Delrin?
“Acetal” (POM) is the generic material name. “Delrin” is DuPont’s brand name for acetal homopolymer. Delrin offers slightly higher strength and stiffness, while generic acetal copolymer offers better hot-water and chemical resistance.
How strong is acetal compared to other plastics?
Acetal is significantly stronger and more rigid than HDPE or UHMW. It has high tensile strength, excellent fatigue resistance, and maintains its shape under load. This makes it suitable for high-precision, high-wear mechanical parts.
Is acetal food-grade?
Most acetal copolymer grades are food-safe and compliant with FDA/EFSA requirements. They are used in food machinery components because they resist moisture, do not absorb odours, and maintain stability under repeated cleaning.
