Plastic parts where metal is the wrong answer

Engineering plastics replace metal where the job wants light weight, corrosion resistance, quiet running or self-lubrication. A nylon gear runs quieter than a steel one; a UHMWPE liner outlasts a steel chute against abrasion; an acetal bush holds size where nylon would swell.

Choosing the material, briefly

Acetal is the stable, precise one — it machines beautifully and holds dimensions, so it suits gears, bushes and anything with a tolerance on it. Nylon is tougher and quieter but absorbs moisture, which means it moves dimensionally in wet service. UHMWPE has the lowest friction and the best abrasion resistance of the three, which is why chute and hopper liners are made from it, but it is not for precision parts. PTFE handles temperature and chemical attack that would finish the others. PEEK is where the duty justifies the cost.

Describe the load, the speed, the temperature and the surface the part runs against, and we will tell you which we would use. That is a more useful conversation than a datasheet comparison.

Sending a drawing

A dimensioned drawing or a DXF is ideal. Mark which dimensions are critical and whether the tolerance has to hold across a batch — those two notes change how a part is machined and are worth more to us than tightening every dimension on the page.

Which plastic should my part be?
Tell us the load, the speed, the temperature and what the part runs against. Acetal for precision and dimensional stability, nylon for toughness and quiet running, UHMWPE for abrasion and low friction, PTFE for chemical and temperature extremes, PEEK where the duty justifies it. We would rather recommend from the duty than have you pick from a table.
Can you work from a sample part?
Yes. Send the part or clear photographs with key dimensions, and tell us what failed if it failed — a worn bush and a cracked one point at different materials. Reverse-engineering from a sample is common for replacement wear parts.
Do you do one-offs?
Yes, one-offs and short runs both. There is no minimum order. A repeat run is nested on the sheet rather than cut one at a time, so the price per part falls as the quantity grows — send the quantity with the drawing and the quote will reflect that.
