Engineering Standards & Fabrication Capabilities
Turned parts in engineering plastics
Anything round is a lathe job: bushes, bearings, spacers, sleeves, rollers, threaded inserts, machined tube. Turning plastic is not turning metal — the material moves under heat and cutting pressure, and it needs different feeds, tooling and workholding to come off the machine at the size the drawing asks for.
Where turned plastic beats turned metal
Weight, corrosion resistance and self-lubrication, mostly. A nylon or acetal bush runs without grease where a bronze one needs it. A plastic roller will not rust in a washdown environment. And where a turned part contacts something you do not want to mark, plastic is kinder than steel.
Material, and the one that catches people out
Acetal is the default for turned precision work: it machines cleanly and holds size. Nylon is tougher but absorbs moisture, so a nylon part turned to size dry will grow in wet service — worth knowing before you specify a tight running fit. Oil-filled nylon grades exist for exactly that reason. PETP and PEEK cover the harder duties.
What to send
A dimensioned drawing or DXF, with the critical diameters marked and the fit noted — running clearance, transition or interference. If the part replaces something, say what it runs in or on. Tolerances are confirmed against the drawing at quote stage.
How we quote it
Send a drawing, a DXF, a sketch or the part itself. We quote the finished job — material, machining, finishing and freight — rather than a rate you have to assemble yourself, and we confirm the critical dimensions and tolerances against your drawing before anything is cut.
Everything happens in our Gold Coast workshop: cutting, machining, forming and welding on one floor, so a job does not move between suppliers to get finished. Completed work ships Australia-wide from the capital-city depot nearest you.
